This Labor Day weekend is the highly anticipated first edition of SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR DEGENERATES. After its third year as a WMC staple, the Made Event team brings it closer to home for this inaugural edition. "[Sunday School] A lesson in the afterhours” –ResidentAdvisor.netWe checked in with Mike Bindra & Laura De Palma to get the inside scoop on their version of "extreme clubbing," a word about the different venues and why there's no room for the "superstar DJ."

Q&A with MADE EVENT [Laura De Palma & Mike Bindra]

After three successful years of SSFD in Miami during the Winter Music Conference, what was the impetus to bring it to NYC?

‘extreme clubbing’ - it’s not for the faint of heart
We look forward to presenting this event at WMC ever year. After three successful years at WMC we figured, let’s bring it home. Once a year isn’t enough!

Adultnapper - red pill or blue pill?

What makes the SSFD so special in clubber’s minds?

Our guess is it is a combination of a few things: We’ve always programmed SSFD with music that we want to hear at a party. In a sense it’s less artist based, although we hope that over the years we’ve introduced people to new talent and showcased artist we love in the best possible way, with the best possible sound. Basically, the events are purely about the music and the people that love it. Another thing that we think contributes to the success is the ‘extreme clubbing’ aspect of it. You kind of have to do the whole thing, all 24, (or 27 in this case) hours of it to have that experience. It’s not for the faint of heart, and there’s that kind of camaraderie when you’re in the final hours and the DJ plays exactly the track you want to hear…

We’re always impressed by the keen sense of programming that goes into the SSFD parties. What were some of the elements of design in masterminding the three distinct programs and their respective venues?

A big element in the programming for SSFD has been the environment. Pawnshop at WMC is great in that it offers a few distinct environments with two inside rooms and the terrace. We’ve observed over the last couple of WMC’s that people would kind of rotate around the club at certain hours of the event. So in that sense it wasn’t a stretch to plan the NYC debut - we just had to do it in three different venues. And if you get on the bus, we don’t think it will be too much of an inconvenience. :)

We’ve spent a lot of summers in Ibiza…where extreme clubbing can be at it’s best - or worst. Musically, it comes out of the times in Ibiza where the party was around the clock - and this is what we would have wanted to hear throughout a full on ‘session’. The plan for every SSFD is to not let up, you kind of want to make sure you catch every set, it’s a logical progression.
There is really no room for the ‘superstar’ DJ.
Also, in SSFD, we have always wanted it to be an equal playing field. There is really no room for the ‘superstar’ DJ. If the music is good, the people will groove. And finally, we have to give a shout out to Adultnapper, who is always introducing us to someone new that “has to play.”

There’s been much hullabaloo about Studio B closing indefinitely due to Community Board complaints and their general lack of permits (allegedly a dance club without a cabaret – for shame!). What does a promoter have to go through when a venue is suddenly unavailable? What can we expect at Rebel?

Basically, scramble – quick! Seriously, that expression making lemonade out of lemons couldn’t be more true with this switch. The Nit & Grit factor is always an important element of SSFD, and Rebel definitely has it. Really important to note is that we are only taking the top floor of Rebel, and we are bringing in ALL of the sound, by Integral Sound. So that upstairs will be tight and pumping! It’s pretty much the perfect environment for the Sunday night portion.

The Yard is a hidden gem deep in the heart of Brooklyn. It’s hard to find a venue tantamount to the patio at the Pawn Shop in Miami but we think The Yard is up to the challenge. How did you discover The Yard and what elements of it give it that special Sunday School afterhours vibe?

We were on the lookout for an outdoor venue that we could go all day in, and one good lead pointed in the direction of The Yard. It’s outdoors, and there will be a booth, an Integral Sound system, and a bunch of people going crazy [for the music]...that is what will give it that special Sunday School vibe.

Oh, and…take the bus!
